The Annotated Field Guide of Ulysses S. Grant is a musical 16mm documentary following Grant's destruction of the fake white supremacist country called the Confederate States of America.
For four years in the 1860ís half of the United States was held hostage by an unrecognized white supremacist republic. Shot on 16mm in national military parks, swamps, forests and the suburban sprawl across the former battlefields, the film follows General Grantís path liberating the southern United States. It focuses not only on his battles but on massacres committed by Confederate armies and the role of enslaved people in the war. With additional illustrations and animations from hex & counter wargames and bubblegum cards that were popular after the Centennial Anniversary of the Civil War, the film features original music and a sweet sound design.
"...Although the 16mm photography has a faded, almost nostalgic beauty, the more we learn about the battles that took place on those grounds, the more apparent it is that weíre looking at haunted lands. Itís not just the ghosts of the fallen that come to mind, though ó itís the nationís regrettable repetition of the mistakes of the past, as racism remains among Americaís most divisive issues... as an idiosyncratic perspective on wilful blindness and moral failure, Finnís essay film grows in power as it moves along. Its final segment adroitly connects the nationís white-supremacist past to its present, making plain that The Annotated Field Guide is no mere history lesson..."
